Key Features in Blackbaord to Successfully Facilitate Your Online Course

(Why and how do you use the features in your course to accomplish learning?)

Reason for this WIKI:

Since there are so many tools and different ways to use the tools in Blackboard to accomplish learning outcomes, we thought it would be a good idea for the teaching community to share what tools you are using in blackboard and how they help you accomplish your learning objectives. Please contribute to this wiki below:

Discussion Board

  • I create a weekly discussion forum and pose 1 or 2 questions a week to get the students talking about key themes in the lesson
  • I set up a "Questions for Instructor Forum" in the discussion board to streamline all of the students questions
  • I create a virtual cafe forum in the discussion board for students to get to know each other better and talk about anything outside of classroom topics
  • add more here...

Assignment Manager

  • I use the assignment manager to collect their weekly journals because it automatically puts the item in the gradebook
  • I use the assignment manager to collect their papers and projects
  • add more here

To View the Statistical Results of a Test

  • This is a nice way to view each test item and see statistically how well the class did on each question
  •  I give a pre-test and this allows me to see which content areas need more emphasis
  • To view this in Blackboard go to the grade book and click on the name of your test item. In my case I clicked on "pre-test"
  • Next, select the "Assessment Attempt Details"
  • You will now see each test question, with a list of the possible answers (I used mostly multiple choice). Next to each answer will be the percent of students who answered correctly
